VILLEPINTE, France -- According to company sources, Hensoldt will be presenting its new land-based air defense radar at this year's Eurosatory 2018. The new radar, dubbed the TRML-4D is based on the company's TRS-4D naval radar, and features C-Band (NATO G-Band) frequency operation. A secondary radar has also been incorporated, allowing for contemporary IFF operational standards that are compatible with interrogation modes up to Mk XIIA/S.
In keeping with the latest trends in the radar industry, Hensoldt has incorporated Gallium Nitride (GaN) components in the TRML-4D's active electronically scanned array (AESA). The use of GaN components allows for lower power consumption and higher output, creating a more reliable and powerful product. Hensoldt says that the radar is designed for high operational availability during continuous operation, and that the probability for zero critical failures during a 24-hour, seven days a week, three month mission is more than 99 percent.
Operationally, the TRML-4D is optimized for small, fast, and low-flying and/or maneuvering cruise missiles, aircraft, and helicopters. It allows near- to long-range air detection and weapon assignment. The radar also incorporates dedicated C-RAM and C-UAS (C-UAV) modes, while being capable of use in complex environments that include mixed clutter and high target densities. Detection is provided out to a range of 135 NM (250 km) with a stated altitude coverage of 16 NM (30 km) in a -2° to +70° vertical and -50° to +50° horizontal field of regard in a 360° rotating layout.
Although, Hensoldt does not specify missile compatibility within the materials that Forecast International has reviewed, the company does specify that the TRML-4D is compatible with "most of the short range and medium range surface-to-air missile systems."
Company sources say that at least one customer for the TRML-4D has already been secured, but have not named the "non-NATO" customer explicitly. Officials revealed that deliveries are expected to begin in 2020. The company it seems, at Eurosatory 2018, is hoping to add to this client pool.
Eurosatory 2018 is being held at the Paris Nord Villepinte Exhibition Center in France from June 11-15.
