LIMA -- The BAP Pisco, a Makassar class LPD, has begun tests at sea, representing the final stage of construction.
Makassar-class vessels are 122 meters long and displace 7,300 tons. They will have the capacity to transport 636 tons of fuel, 600 tons of water, 360 cubic meters of dry food and 136 cubic meters of fresh food, and can accommodate 557 people aboard including crew and passengers. They will be used primarily for humanitarian relief missions during and after natural disasters.
The original Makassar-class vessel was designed in South Korea for Indonesia. Peru ordered one ship in 2012 and began construction in July 2013. BAP Pisco was launched on April 25, 2017.
It will be joined by a second vessel, named BAP Paita. On March 15, 2018 SIMA Peru and Posco Daewoo signed a contract for the supply of design and materials for the construction of a second multipurpose vessel for the Peruvian Navy.
