NEWTOWN, Conn. - The Hungwe, South African defense company Denel's new unmanned aircraft, has carried out its first test flight.

The Hungwe is able to endure approximately six hours of flight time, has a Direct Line-of-Sight range of 100 kilometers, is able to reach an altitude of 12,000 feet, and has piloted and autonomous flight capability. It has an all-composite low drag design that ensures optimum performance.

The UAV is intended to meet a range of surveillance needs, including border patrol, anti-piracy, and search-and-rescue operations.

Denel believes the aircraft will appeal to less developed nations, particularly in the African market, due to its low acquisition and operating cost.
