MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay - Austrian firearms producer, Glock, plans to open a new plant in Uruguay.

Glock intends for the plant to meet the needs of both the military and police.

The Uruguayan Interior Ministry recently ordered 8,000 pistols for the national police. The plant will also be responsible for the assembly of pistols for the Uruguayan Army's Materiel and Armament Service. Last year, the Army decided to replace their 9mm Browning Hi-Power pistols with the 9mm Glock 17. A total of 1,500 pistols will be supplied as kits and assembled in Uruguay.

The Navy has also recently ordered Glock firearms. In January 2014, the Navy ordered 1,000 9mm Glock model 17 pistols and accessories from the company.
