NEW DELHI -- India wants the Rafale fighters it is purchasing from France to come armed with the Meteor medium-range air-to-air missile. This missile is seen as more capable than the weapons that equip Pakistani and Chinese combat aircraft. The first Rafale fighters will arrive at the Ambala airbase in May 2020.
India is requesting at least 8-10 Meteor missiles to be delivered with the first four Rafale fighters. India is purchasing 36 Rafale fighters as part of a Rs 59,000 crore deal signed in September 2016.
Under the original plan, India is to receive the Meteor, as well as the SCALP strike missile, several months after the arrival of the first Rafale fighter. France is examining the request.
