DUSSELDORF, Germany -- Germany has placed an order for the MELLS anti-tank guided missiles from the EuroSpike GmbH joint venture. The MELLS missiles ordered for the Bundeswehr will be used by infantry personnel and replace the legacy Milan LFK man-portable anti-tanks systems (MANPATS) currently in service. The EuroSpike consortium consists of Rheinmetall, Diehl Defense and Rafael.
Germany's BWB armaments directorate began the MELLS (Mehrrollenfähiges leichtes Lenkflugkörpersystem) initiative in 2009, which consists of the long-range Spike LR missile produced by Rafael. Rheinmetall provides the integrated command and launch systems.
The first order in 2009 involved 311 Spike LR missiles at a cost of EUR154 million. That order included an option for an additional 1,160 missiles valued at €119.3 million, for which the German Bundestag gave purchase approval in 2011. An additional order followed on March 31, 2017, involving 1,000 more guided SPIKE anti-tank missiles and 97 launcher units under the MELLS program.
The latest order calls for deliveries to begin in 2020 and run through 2023 and includes an option for 100 additional systems. The MELLS missile has a range of up to 4,000 meters.
