LIMA -- On February 19, the Minister of Defense of Peru announced the new formation of a special-purpose brigade intended to stem the tide of illegal mining operations in the Peruvian Amazon.
The Minister explained that the newly formed brigade will initially operate in tandem with the existing deployment structures of the National Police, deploying military ground and rotorcraft assets to support and shore up in the police security infrastructure in the area surrounding the Tambopata National Reserve. The deployments take place in the context of a broader effort conducted by the National Police to confront illegal mining under the banner of the "Mercurio 2019" operation.
In the intermediate term, the Army will establish three temporary bases in the region to house the Brigade for roughly half a year at which point a decision will be made as to whether to it is necessary to establish a more permanent military presence. The formation composition of the special purpose brigade has been formed from the existing Sixth Brigade of the Peruvian Military's Special Forces component.
