BEIJING -- The Chinese government may continue with its series of defense spending increases. China's defense budget in 2019 could reach 1.2 trillion yuan ($179 billion). Beijing will release its defense budget figure in early March.

This spending funds China's massive military modernization program. The 2019 defense budget could increase by 8-9 percent over 2018. The 2018 China defense budget was 1.11 trillion yuan, an 8.1 percent increase over the 2017 spending level.

China could complete its military modernization program in 2035.
