MIAMI -- The Miami Beach Police Department is using tethered aerostats instead of unmanned air vehicles (UAVs). This decision came after a 2015 ban on police UAV surveillance.
MBPD purchased the aerostar this winter. The aerostat assists in monitoring the safety of large crowd events in Miami Beach. The MBPD admitted it acquired the tethered aerostat to work around the Freedom from Unwanted Surveillance Act, which restricts police use of UAVs.
Unlike UAVs, tethered aerostats do not require FAA authorization to enter public airspace because of their tether.
