KYIV -- The United States is offering to transfer surplus Oliver Hazard Perry class frigates to the Ukrainian Navy.

The transfer of the frigates would significantly improve the defense capability of the Ukrainian Navy in the Azov and the Black sea. The United States commissioned 51 Oliver Hazard Perry frigates from 1977 to 1989. The USS Simpson (FFG 56) was decommissioned in Sept. 29, 2015 and was the last frigate in the Navy's inventory.

Presently, the United States has transferred frigates to: Turkey (8), Taiwan (8), Australia (6), Spain (6), Egypt (4 units) and Poland (2). These ships are armed with a 76mm OTO Melara gun, 20mm Phalanx CIWS, and two Mk 32 torpedo systems (3 launchers for torpedoes).
