MANILA -- The Philippines is likely to acquire fighter aircraft from Sweden. Saab is offering the Gripen combat aircraft to the Philippine Air Force (PAF). The Gripen cost less and the maintenance cost are lwer than other options.
The PAF has been considering the purchase of a new fighter for over a decade. This new aircraft will replace its U.S.-made F-5A/B fighters, which were retired in 2005.
The United States had offered F-16 fighter jets to the Philippinesm, but Manila decided they were too expensive.
