NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. -- A U.S. Air Force-oeprated MQ-9 Reaper unmanned air vehicle (UAV) downed an aerial target drone during a training exercise. The Reaper UAV used an AIM-9 Sidewinder short-range air-to-air missile during an operation in November 2017.
This effort is key to preparing for the next big aerial war against near-peer threats such as Russia or China, according to U.S. Air Force officials. The MQ-9 Reaper UAV will place a big part in future conflicts. This UAV usually carries AGM-114 HELLFIRE missiles, as well as GBU-12 Paveway II and GBU-38 Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMs).
The Reaper conducted 950 strikes, firing approximately 1,500 weapons, between January 2015 and August 2017. The U.S. Air Force began phasing out its MQ-1 Predator UAV in 2017.
