MOSCOW -- Russia is increasing the range of the weapons carried by the Ka-52 attack helicopter.
In a statement to TASS Russian News Agency, Russian Helicopters' press service said, "The Ka-52 helicopter, just like all of the holding’s products, have much room for upgrade and improvement. There are plans for increasing the range of its weapons and for unifying them with other types of attack helicopters of Russian manufacture."
Furthermore, the helicopters are to receive "the newest radio-electronic equipment and the most advanced on-board defense complex," according to the state-owned firm.
Russian Helicopters did not appear to offer further details on the statements, such as what systems the helicopters will be equipped with or what the timeframe for the upgrade will be.
TASS noted that the Ka-52 currently uses the Vikhr-1 anti-tank guided missile system, which carries a range of up to 10 kilometers. The news agency noted that "[a]ccording to open sources" the Ka-52 -- as well as other Russian helicopters like the Mi-28N, Mi-35, and Mi-8AMTSh -- is to receive the Hermes-A anti-tank missile, which would at least double the range of the Ka-52's anti-tank missiles.
Russia has adapted the President-S on-board defense system onto many of its helicopters, improving their protection against incoming missiles and rockets.
