PARIS - The French Navy has rearmed its Le Triomphant ballistic missile submarine (SSBN). This submarine now carries the new M51 submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM). France took over full responsibility, and the effective command, of Le Triomphant on August 4, 2015.
The refitting of the submarine with the M51 began in May 2013. The boat will now resume testing before returning to the operational cycle. Le Triomphant previously carried the M45 SLBM. The vessel was also outfitted with the SYCOBS (Système de Combat Commun Barracuda/SNLE) tactical combat system and a more effective SGN-3E global navigation system.
Le Triomphant is the second SSBN modified for the M51 SLBM. The Vigilant underwent the same transformation between 2010 and 2013. The next and final submarine to benefit from this major upgrade will be Le Téméraire, beginning in 2016.
