NEWTOWN, Conn. - Lockheed Martin has internally funded development of an Infrared Search and Track (IRST) system, dubbed the Legion Pod. The multi-function sensor system allows for collaborative target identification and tracking even when standard radar is unavailable.
The United States Navy is already installing Lockheed Martin's IRST21 AN/ASG-34 IRST sensor on its F/A-18s. The Legion Pod will adapt this system to a 16-inch diameter structure that also includes a networking processor and datalink, and can be retrofit to F-15 and F-16 aircraft. Lockheed Martin stresses that the Legion Pod can act as a "communication gateway" to allow fourth-generation aircraft - the F-15, F-16 and F/A-18 - to share data with fifth-generation aircraft like the F-22 and F-35.
Test flights are scheduled to begin in 2015.
