THE HAGUE - Estonia reached a deal on December 9 with the government of the Netherlands on the purchase of 44 used CV90 infantry fighting vehicles from Royal Netherlands Army stocks. The deal is estimated at around EUR113 million ($140 million). Deliveries of the vehicles to Estonia will run from 2016 through 2018.

The Netherlands Ministry of Defense had sought to sell off these models as a means of creating financial room for the country's purchase of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter to replace its Air Force's F-16s.

The Estonian Ministry of Defense had reportedly filed a proposal in the spring of 2014 to open talks with the Netherlands on the acquisition of the CV90s. These will equip a mechanized infantry brigade yet to be formed.
