AUSTRIAN DEFENSE MINISTRY PURCHASES LONG-RANGE AIR-DEFENSE RADAR SYSTEM FROM SELEX
ROME - Austria's Ministry of Defense has awarded Selex ES a contract for the provision of its RAT31DL/M deployable air-defense radar system, plus logistics support. The contract includes an option for an additional similar system.
The new RAT31DL/M long-range, mobile DADR (Deployable Air Defense Radar) radar system purchased by Austria will include a 15 meter-high transportable, self-mounting tower. It is expected to enter operational service with the Austrian Armed Forces (Bundesheer) in 2016. It will provide a modern platform allowing Austria to further improve the fleet of existing Selex radars in its inventory that date back to the 1980s when five RAT31S medium-range radars were procured.
Austria began the process of replacing the S-band systems in 2002 when it purchased a lone RAT-31DL 3-D surveillance radar at the cost of EUR25 million. This was followed by the purchase of a further two D-band RAT-31DL radars in 2006 at the cost of EUR50 million.
