NEWTOWN, Conn. -- In China, the People's Liberation Army continues modernizing its multiple launch rocket system inventory.

While the initial phases of this modernization effort concentrated on larger caliber, long-range systems, the PLA's procurement focus is now squarely on the 122mm Type 90/Type 90A. We expect the Type 90 / Type 90A to remain the PLA's primary MLRS program throughout the coming decade.

In December 2013, the Peruvian Ministry of Defense formally selected the Type 90B as the replacement for its aging BM-21 MLRS.

In a contract worth $38.6 million, Peru procured 40 Type 90B launch vehicles, 49 transport-charging machines, 33 4x4 reconnaissance vehicles, five 5-ton trucks, three maintenance cars, four command and control vehicles, and 4,200 rounds of 122mm ammunition.

Although NORINCO aggressively promotes a variety of multiple launch rocket systems on the international market, the Chinese systems simply cannot effectively compete with significantly less expensive surplus systems from Russia. The Forecast International Weapons Group believes that most exports of Chinese multiple launch rocket systems will remain tied to Chinese foreign military aid programs.
