NEW DELHI -- The Indian Navy will acquire heavyweight torpedoes from a local company. Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL) signed a contract with the Indian Navy worth Rs 1,187.82 crores. Under this deal, BDL will deliver the Varunastra heavyweight torpedo to the Indian Navy.

The contract will run for 42 months. Production will take place at BDL Visakhapatnam Unit in cooperation with the India's state-run Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

The Varunastra is an electrically propelled underwater weapon equipped with an advanced automatic and remote controlled guidance system.
