AIRBUS BEGINS CONSTRUCTION OF U.S. A220 MANUFACTURING FACILITY
TOULOUSE, France -- Airbus has launched construction of its A220 Manufacturing Facility in Mobile, Alabama. The assembly line is to be used to meet U.S. demand for Airbus' A220 aircraft, formerly known as the CSeries.
The A220 assembly line will be Airbus' second U.S.-based commercial aircraft production facility. It will be located at the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley, adjacent to the production line for A320 series aircraft. It will facilitate assembly of A220-100 and A220-300 aircraft for U.S. customers. Production is planned to begin in the third quarter of 2019. First delivery of a Mobile-assembled A220 is scheduled for 2020. Airbus said that the new A220 production facilities are to be completed by 2020.
The A220 is purpose-built for the 100-150 seat market. It is powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1500G geared turbofan engines. Range is up to 5,920 kilometers (3,200 nautical miles). The A220 has accumulated an order book of more than 500 aircraft to date.
