NEWTOWN, Conn. -- The AQS-18(V) anti-submarine warfare lightweight active/passive dipping sonar system (an export version of the AQS-13F as used by the U.S. Navy and allies) continues to be marketed through extensive promotion of the system's practicality for light ASW helicopters. Produced by L3 Ocean Systems, this helicopter-borne dipping sonar presents a highly desirable solution for many ASW applications, especially smaller platforms that have limited helicopter operation facilities.
As a large number of the light frigates entering service have facilities for light helicopters only, they will primarily carry general-purpose types; however, these will include a number of ASW-dedicated aircraft, opening up a market opportunity for the AQS-18(V).
Furthermore, the high number of AQS-18(V) sonars already in service worldwide would suggest a continuing upgrade and maintenance market. All this activity should provide opportunity for enhancements, upgrades, and new variants.
Potential sales of light helicopters for maritime use may also open new markets for the AQS-18(V) sonar series.
