BRUSSELS - Canada and Poland have opted to join a NATO Alliance initiative to develop follow-on solutions for aging maritime multirole platforms. The signing ceremony on February 15 included six other members: France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain and Turkey. Together the partners have sought define common requirements for future maritime aircraft capabilities as each faces deterioration and/or age in their respective maritime airborne fleets.
The initiative was launched on June 29, 2017, and now moves forward with eight partners seeking to finalize a common requirements document by the end of this year.
Poland is preparing to undertake the procurement of three maritime patrol aircraft between 2023 and 2030 under its "Rybitwa" (Tern) program. Knowing what its NATO allies in Europe are considering to meet the multiple roles - anti-submarine warfare, surveillance, reconnaissance, intelligence-collecting - required of new-generation maritime patrol aircraft may go far in determining how Warsaw plans to replace the Polish Navy's two PZL An-28s and 13 M-28B "Bryza" (Breeze) aircraft in the MPA role.
