MOSCOW - Following last year's order for an additional six Project 636.3 submarines, Russia will this year begin laying down two of the submarines at Admiralty Shipyards in St. Petersburg. The Defense Ministry made this announcement on Thursday.
The Defense Ministry did not specify exactly when the submarines would be laid down, but Navy officials have said that construction could start during the first half of the year.
Russia placed an order for six Project 636.3 submarines in 2016. These six follow the initial order for six, which were built for the Black Sea Fleet. The new submarines will join the Pacific Fleet once completed.
The current schedule calls for two submarines to be delivered in 2019, with two being delivered each year thereafter. By 2021, the Pacific Fleet expects to have all six Project 636.3 submarines in service.
