U.S. SAYS RUSSIA NOT ADHERING TO INF TREATY
WASHINGTON - The United States suspects Russia is violating the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty. This agreement bans the production, maintenance or testing of medium-range missiles.
The INF treaty eliminated land-based nuclear and conventional missiles with ranges from 500 to 5,500 kilometers, as well as their launchers. By 1991, Washington and Moscow eliminated all the banned missiles, about 2,700 in total.
Russia is said to be developing a missile compatible with the Iskander launcher and with a range of 500+ kilometers.
Russia is also accusing the U.S. of violating the pact.
