SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Kazan, Russia--a city more than 1,000 years old--isn't resting on its ancient laurels. As the capital and largest city of the Republic of Tatarstan, Kazan is enjoying year-over-year business growth and the related expansion of residential neighborhoods. However, the region's success has created a challenge: Now facing an energy deficit of approximately 700 megawatts (MW), Kazan must import power from neighboring states.

Help-in the form of reliable, locally produced energy-is on the way. GE has received an order from TGK-16, an independent heat and electricity producer owned by Tatar-American Investment and Finance (TAIF), for an advanced power generation system. The system is based on GE's 9HA.01 Gas Turbine and will be installed at a combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Kazan.

Modernizing the CHP-3 plant will create a total plant efficiency of approximately 80 percent. It also will reduce the region's power shortage, created in part by increased power consumption from Kazan's large number of petrochemical industries and refineries. GE will provide the turnkey solution with support from GAMA Power Systems on engineering and construction of the plant.

GE's air-cooled HA technology, one of the world's largest and most efficient, will operate on natural gas and provide additional electricity for businesses and homes, along with heat for continuous petrochemical production. While using 30 percent less fuel, GE's 9HA power generation system will replace existing gas-fired boilers and increase the CHP facility's electrical production from 420 MW to 808 MW.
