KUALA LUMPUR - Thales UK has selected Global Komited Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidary of the Weststar Group, to help market its range of ground-based air defense systems to the Malaysian Armed Forces. The agreement was signed at the Defence Services Asia Exhibition and Conference in Kuala Lumpur on April 14.

This agreement also covers covered the transfer of technology and knowledge on ground-based air defense systems. Among Thales UK's products is the Starstreak surface-to-air missile (SAM) system.

The Starstreak could replace the Royal Malaysian Air Force's Starburst SAMs. Thales UK recently won two new production contracts for the Starstreak SAM. Thailand and Indonesia will receive these missiles.

The British and South African militaries operate the Starstreak SAM. British officials say that interest in Starstreak has never been stronger.
