BEIRUT - During her visit to Beirut, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a €1 billion aid package for Lebanon covering 2024 to 2027. The funds aim to bolster essential services like education, health, and social protection, and to support economic and banking reforms. The assistance will also enhance the capabilities of the Lebanese Armed Forces and other security entities in managing borders and combating smuggling.

This commitment follows the European Council's discussions emphasizing support for Lebanon's most vulnerable, including refugees and internally displaced persons, and strengthening security forces to counter human trafficking. Since 2011, the EU has provided over €3 billion in aid to Lebanon, including significant support for Syrian refugees and host communities.

LUXEMBOURG - The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) delivered two modernized Bergepanzer 2 (BPz2) Recovery Vehicles to the Lithuanian Armed Forces, expanding the fleet to four modernized BPz2. The deliveries were completed in early April

The Agency successfully managed the BPz2 Program modernization. This has enabled the Lithuanian Armed Forces to significantly expand their field capabilities to support the PzH2000 operation, by providing a modern and effective solution to cover a recurrent gap in the operation scenarios. This new solution provides recovery and field support capabilities for vehicles in the weight class that exceeds 50 t.

The basic BPz2 Recovery Vehicles received several upgrades with a focus on performance, mobility, weight and craning equipment.

In its most recent support package, Germany has handed over 10 Marder infantry fighting vehicles, two Skynex air defense systems, ammunition for Leopard 2 tanks, IRIS-T SLM air defense missiles, and other aid in its latest aid delivery to Ukraine, the government said on April 29.

The assistance services consist of two strands: on the one hand there are financial resources from the Federal Government’s security capacity building initiative, which are used to finance arms deliveries and other industrial materials. On the other hand, materials are being provided from the Federal Armed Forces’ supplies. Military aid worth around EUR28 billion has by now been made available by Germany or been earmarked for supporting Ukraine over the next few years.

Since the start of the Russian war of aggression on 24 February 2022, Germany has provided around EUR5.2 billion euros worth of materials from the Federal Armed Forces’ supplies to Ukraine. In addition, more than 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers received military training in Germany. These training costs amount to about EUR282 million to date. Further expenditures were also incurred for treating injured Ukrainian soldiers.
