WASHINGTON - The U.S. State Department has approved a potential foreign military sale to Saudi Arabia for training and logistics support worth an estimated $250 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency has informed Congress about the sale, which aims to bolster the training of the Royal Saudi Naval Forces. This sale adds to a previous $37 million training agreement and includes advanced military training programs provided by the U.S. Navy.

The sale supports U.S. foreign policy and national security by enhancing the security of Saudi Arabia, a key ally in promoting stability and economic progress in the Gulf Region. This agreement is also expected to improve Saudi Arabia's defense capabilities against regional threats, support maritime freedom, and enhance interoperability with U.S. and other Gulf forces.

KAZAN, Russia - Russian shipbuilders are preparing to launch two new patrol boats for the Baltic and Black Sea Fleets later this month.

The press service of the Russian Ministry of Defense said that Zelenodolsk Shipyard, owned by Ak Bars Holding, will launch Taifun and Victor Velikiy simultaneously. The small missile boats are capable of traveling internal waterways in Russia, which they will use to transit to their permanent bases once construction and testing has completed.

Taifun, a Project 22800 ‘Karakurt’ class missile boat, was laid down in September 2019 and is expected to be delivered to the Baltic Fleet in 2025, joining several others from the class already in service with that fleet.

Karakurt missile ships are capable of carrying Pantsir-M anti-air systems and also have eight VLS cells for either Kalibr or Oniks cruise missiles.

Victor Velikiy, meanwhile, will be delivered to the Black Sea Fleet, which has been targeted repeatedly since February 2022 by the Ukrainian military. Four Project 22160 patrol boats have joined the Black Sea Fleet already, with two damaged by Ukrainian strikes. In March, Ukraine said it sank the Sergey Kotov, which was commissioned in 2021.
