SAO PAULO, Brazil -Brazil is preparing to launch a competition for the supply of 105 mm turret-mounted guns to equip the Army's Guarani VBR-MR 8x8 armored medium reconnaissance vehicles.

A request for proposals will be issued in August. A contract for the purchase of a pilot batch could be signed this year.

Last May, Brazil issued a Request for Information and has narrowed down the list of contenders based on responses. The four companies that will compete for the contract are Belgium company CMI, Rheinmetall of Germany, Italy's Oto Melara, and French company Nexter.

The 8x8 version of the Guarani APC is in development with Iveco. The vehicle is intended to replace the Army's fleet of EE-9 Cascavels.
