WARSAW - Poland plans to acquire the Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM). The Polish military is looking to enhance its combat capability in the wake of Russia's invasion of the Crimea and the activities of pro-Russian forces in eastern Ukraine.
Lockheed Martin manufactures the JASSM. Poland's F-16 fighters would carry the JASSM. These missiles would provide Poland with a deep strike capability. Poland has purchased 48 F-16 combat aircraft.
In addition, the Polish military is working to modernize its air defenses and planning the acquisition of new unmanned air vehicles (UAVs).
Warsaw is interested in increasing the U.S. military presence in Poland. The U.S. presence in Europe has steadily declined since the end of the Cold War.
