NEWTOWN, Conn. - The Ecuadorian Air Force received its first of three Airbus C295M transport aircraft on August 7. In June 2013, the Air Force issued a Request for Information and two companies submitted proposals. EADS-CASA responded to the request and offered their C295 while Alenia Aermacchi offered its C-27J Spartan. Three C295s were ordered later that year from Airbus but the purchase was not made public until June 2014.
The first aircraft was officially handed over on June 6 at the company's facilities in Seville, Spain but not delivered to the Air Force until now.
The transports will be used for military and humanitarian missions as well as for support to populations in remote areas or in emergency situations. They will replace the ageing British Aerospace HS-748-2As.
The contract also includes a Full In Service Support (FISS) package for the operation and maintenance of the fleet. The remaining two aircraft in the order are slated for delivery in October.
