ALAMEDA, Calif. - The Myanmar Air Defense Force (Tatmadaw Lay) held a commissioning ceremony at Meiktila Air Base on August 22 in which inventories for two platforms were inducted into service.
The two platforms involved were Chinese-built Y-8F-200W transport aircraft and Grob G120TP trainers.
The two Y-8F-200Ws from China's state-owned Shaanxi (part of Aviation Industry Corporation of China, or AVIC) add to an existing fleet of between 2-6 Y-8Fs already in Tatmadaw Lay service. The new Y-8Fs will perform additional duties beyond their normal airlift mission, which will include maritime search-and-rescue and maritime surveillance.
The 10 Grob G120TP basic trainers appear to be the second batch of an original 20-unit order made by Myanmar. The initial lot of 10 were delivered and brought into service in the second half of 2015.
