WASHINGTON - Sikorsky Aircraft was awarded a $46 million contract from the Pentagon on September 3 for the production of four UH-60M Blackhawk helicopters intended for Slovakia. These helicopters form part of what will likely evolve into a nine-helicopter order by Slovakia as per their government-to-government request notified to the U.S. Congress by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) earlier on February 18. That notification involved the aforementioned nine-unit purchase along with accompanying parts and support amounting to an estimated total of $450 million. Slovak Defense Minister Martin Glvac later announced on April 29, 2015, that an agreement had been reached between all parties regarding the Black Hawk purchase that placed the total price tag at $261 million.
Under the Pentagon contract awarded to Sikorsky all work on the four Blackhawks must be completed by May 31, 2017. Once delivered and put into Slovak service the Black Hawks will be used to perform border patrol and rapid-reaction duties, as well as fire-fighting, counter-terrorism, and humanitarian operations.
