NEWTOWN, Conn. - Russia's RAC MiG Corp, in conjunction with technicians from the Peruvian Air Force (FAP), has redelivered the first batch of eight modernized MiG-29 Fulcrum fighters to the FAP.
Under a $106 million contract awarded in August 2008 by the Peruvian Defense Ministry, RAC MiG is upgrading all 19 of Peru's MiG-29s in inventory. The Russian planes will be upgraded to the SMT standard with new avionics, communications, and electronic countermeasures systems, as well as multifunction color displays and hands-on throttle and stick (HOTAS) controls. The radar will also be upgraded under the contract with Phazotron's Zhuk-ME technology.
By May 2012, six of the aircraft had been upgraded. Work had been delayed because the aircraft were found to be in worse condition than anticipated, a fact that the technicians discovered only after arriving in Peru. However, by July, several aircraft had been observed performing test flights. A total of eight have now been returned to service.
The upgrade will expand the aircraft's operational life by 20 years.
