TOULOUSE, France - Airbus announced that following discussions with Skymark Airlines and "in light of the airline's expressed intentions in respect of the A380, airbus has in accordance with its contractual rights, notified Skymark Airlines that the purchase order for the six A380s signed in 2011 has been terminated. Airbus is reserving all its rights and remedies."
At the time of the contract signing in February 2011, Skymark Airlines president, Shinichi Nishikubo, said, "We believe that the A380, the world's most cost-efficient, modern and environmentally friendly aircraft with cutting-edge technologies, will provide us with a strong competitive advantage and safe operation. We will become the very first Japanese airline to offer our passengers a unique and new experience of flying - more space, more comfort and a quieter cabin. With the four-engined A380, we are free from ETOPS constraints and can provide flexible operations."
Skymark, a low-cost airline headquartered at Tokyo International Airport is a domestic carrier and Japan's third-largest airline. It had been expected to operate the A380s on routes to JFK in New York City, London's Heathrow, and Frankfurt. However, Reuters recently quoted industry sources as saying Skymark, which has reported its first loss in five years "faces a challenge in taking delivery of the A380s, which were worth around $350 million each at list prices when the carrier placed its firm order in 2011."
