SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - NorthWestern Energy's new 60-MW natural gas-fired peaking Unit #2 has started commercial operation in Aberdeen, South Dakota. The plant will provide peaking power during periods of high demand, typically when weather is very hot or cold.
Electrical upgrades to existing substation, transmission and natural gas pipelines that serve the plant have already been completed. The $55 million generating unit joins an existing peaking unit, and the expanded site features a water storage tank, an operations and maintenance facility, and a 60-MW Pratt & Whitney gas turbine generator.
