MACDILL AFB, Fla. - US Special Operations Command has taken delivery of the first of eight new-production MH-47G Chinook helicopters. For years now, SOCOM has been flying older aircraft that began life as C, D or E model Chinooks, but the service opted in 2011 for new-build aircraft. Honeywell's T55-GA-714A turobshafts power the MH-47G, as well as the CH-47F model currently in production, but with the addition of infrared signature suppressors.

Located near Tampa, Florida, MacDill Air Force Base's host wing is the 6th Air Mobility Wing of the Air Mobility Command (AMC), part of AMC's Eighteenth Air Force. The U.S. Special Operations Command is also located on the base.
