NEWTOWN, Conn. - Pratt & Whitney revealed that it had suspended delivery of F135 engines to the F-35 fighter program back in May of this year, but has not said why the decision was not made public. An in-house inspection and testing process raised questions regarding the origin of the titanium used by a supplier to make critical engine parts. Pratt subsequently replaced all the suspect engine parts in its inventory for not meeting specifications and was able to determine that the parts already installed in the delivered engines did not pose a safety of flight risk. The company says ten engines were affected by the suspended delivery and an additional four that were not yet under contract.
