GYERYONG, South Korea - The Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) is leaning towards purchasing additional airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft. Currently the ROKAF operates four Boeing 737-based Peace Eye airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft purchased at the cost of $1.59 billion under a November 27, 2006 contract. These were brought into service between 2011 and 2012.
With South Korea expanding its air defense identification zone (KADIZ) in December 2013 to include a reef and other islands off the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula, the ROKAF has determined it requires two more AEW aircraft in order to adequately cover the entirety of the broader swathe of territory. The expanded KADIZ occurred shortly after China unilaterally declared the expansion of its own ADIZ over a contested group of rocky islets in the East China Sea claimed by Japan.
