ROK SAYS U.S. HAS MADE NO REQUEST FOR THAAD DEPLOYMENT
SEOUL - Wi Sung-lac, the South Korean ambassador to Russia, said the U.S. has made no official request to South Korea concerning deployment of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system to the peninsula.
South Korea does not plan to join the U.S.-led missile defense program. Instead, Seoul will develop its own missile defense system. South Korea will exchange intelligence data with the United States, but will not integrate its system with those designed by Washington.
U.S. Forces Korea Commander Gen. Curtis Scaparrotti did confirm that Washington is considering deploying a THAAD battery to South Korea to improve its missile defenses on the peninsula.
South Korea is working on the Korea Air and Missile Defense (KAMD) system. This system is designed for low-tier, multiple-interceptions. This system will destroy missiles at altitudes of 40-50 km.
