NEWTOWN, Conn. - Low-rate production of the 152mm 2A65 Msta-B towed howitzer occurs on an as-needed basis only, primarily for sporadic Russian Army procurement.
Although the 2A65 Msta-B carries a unit price 20 percent less than that of the 2S19, the significantly greater capability of the self-propelled 2S19 has effectively placed the 2A65 Msta-B in the position of odd man out with the Russian Army. Since the initial fielding of the 2S19 with the (then) Soviet Army in 1989, 2A65 production has dropped off precipitously.
Although Rosoboronexport continues to offer the 2A65 Msta-B for export, the Russians apparently consider the 2A65 a lost cause. The only export sales have been to states of the former Soviet Union.
The Forecast International Weapons Group expects 2A65 Msta-B sales will likely remain limited to occasional Russian Army orders and sales to states of the former Soviet Union - that is, to armies already committed to Russian-design 152mm artillery and unable to afford upgrading to NATO-standard 155mm systems.
