SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador - The government of President Enrique Peña Nieto has issued a second report stressing the importance of military equipment procurement plans for the period 2012-2018.

The detailed report covers plans for both the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) and the Marine Secretariat (Semar). Some of the key plans include the production of infantry weapons, the acquisition of new aircraft, and the construction of naval ships.

Sedena's arms manufacturing entity has already produced 9,500 5.56mm FX-05 Xihuacóatl rifles which will replace the current standard infantry rifle, the 7.62mm HK G3. The FX-05 was developed primarily as a cost-saving measure. Sedena will also be responsible for the purchase of more than 938 vehicles, 577 of which will be Cheyene terrain trucks, 200 will be 6.5 ton Freighlinter trucks, and 100 will be basic emergency ambulances.

Semar will reportedly purchase 121 double cabin trucks in order to strengthen its capacity to combat crime and support disaster relief efforts. The Navy will also receive new logistic support ships which will be built locally.

The Air Force will receive 18 Beechcraft T-6C+ Texan II advanced training aircraft, a Learjet 45XR light transport, and an Agusta Westland AW109SP helicopter.
