NEWTOWN, Conn. - The Panamanian National Air Service (Senan) will replace the Bell 412 helicopter that crashed this past February.
The helicopter (registration No. AN-137) crashed during Operation Martillo on February 6, 2014. The helicopter was in the midst of a surveillance mission in conjunction with the USS Halyburton (FFG 40) when it went down. According to authorities, the helicopter was chasing a suspicious boat when the Bell became unstable. Aircraft mechanic, Lieutenant Agustín Santos Vinda, was killed in the accident and eight others were injured, including Senan director, Commander Belsio González, and three members of the Naval Intelligence Directorate.
Senan expects to acquire a new Bell 412 within the coming weeks. The new aircraft will be named the Lieutenant Agustín Santos Vinda. According to official information, the helicopter will be delivered from Kuwait, after a stopover in Tennessee, (USA).
Senan normally operates four Bell 412s. The first one was acquired in 2009 upon the formation of the Senan, and three more were ordered in March 2010.
