FIRST IMPROVED PROJECT 885M NUCLEAR SUBMARINE SLATED FOR DELIVERY TO RUSSIAN NAVY IN 2016
MOSCOW - The Russian Navy is expected to receive an improved version of the Yasen-class nuclear submarine within two years. According to the head of the Malahkit design bureau, the first improved Project 885M sub, the Kazan, will be delivered in 2016.
A total of eight are to be built by 2020, seven of which will be the modernized and improved Project 885M version. They will eventually replace the eight Project 949B Oscar II submarines.
The first vessel in the class, the Severodvinsk, was commissioned in June 2014. The Severodvinsk is equipped with three series-produced super-sonic 3M54 Kalibr cruise missiles (SS-N-27) with a range of more than 2,500 kilometers; 3M55 Oniks (SS-N-26) cruise missiles; self-guided torpedoes; and mines.
The class has a displacement of 13,800 tons and a length of 120 meters, is equipped with a pump jet propulsor, and can attain 31 knots submerged. The armament has not been officially disclosed, but it will reportedly carry anti-ship cruise missiles, either the P-800 Oniks supersonic cruise missile or 3M14 and 3M54 missiles from the Club system. The missiles will be fired from eight vertical launches in addition to torpedo tubes.
