NEWTOWN, Conn. - The first modernized EE-11 Urutu 6x6 armored personnel carriers (APC) will be delivered to the Brazilian Army soon.
The vehicles are being modernized by Technicae Projetos e Serviços Automotivos, a Brazilian operation of Singapore's ST Kinetics. Final tests are now under way, the company reports. Once prototype testing is complete, the platforms will be redelivered.
Under a BRL4.3 million ($1.4 million) contract awarded in November 2014 by the Arsenal de Guerra de São Paulo (AGSP) on behalf of the army, 20 vehicles are expected to be modernized and returned to service by the end of December 2016.
The program includes the installation of a new powerpack consisting of a Mercedes-Benz OM 366A diesel engine and Allison Transmission MT-643 automatic transmission.
The army took delivery of approximately 224 EE-11 Urutu's between 1976 and 1987. The service planned to modernize the fleet in the 1990s, but funding problems put a halt on plans and only 39 or so have been worked on over the years.
AGSP has also been contracted to rebuild some of the army's Cascavels to restore them to operational service.
