FI PROJECTS USAF TO SPEND $282 MILLION ON TACTICAL DATA NETWORKS ENTERPRISE PROGRAM
NEWTOWN, Conn. - The U.S. Air Force's Tactical Data Networks Enterprise program researches and develops tactical datalink technologies for ground and air platforms. Forecast International projects that the USAF will invest some $282 million into its Tactical Data Networks Enterprise program over the next ten years. The USAF's need to develop tactical datalink technologies for ground and air platforms is driving this forecast. In FY16 expect Project 5262 to support development of the 5th-4th Generation Gateway project.
Employing tactical datalinks in a joint environment requires the integration of datalink terminals (e.g., the Multifunctional Information Distribution System) into host platforms, as well as the implementation of interoperable datalink networks across all deployed joint and allied platforms. The U.S. Air Force's Tactical Data Networks Enterprise program conducts this work.
Given the importance of communications capabilities in a combat environment, FI expects the Air Force's Tactical Data Networks Enterprise program to be funded beyond the forecast period. However, the U.S. government's budget sequestration may affect funding for the Tactical Data Networks Enterprise program (as well as other government programs).
