PRAGUE - The Czech Republic Ministry of Defense (MoD) has announced its intention to launch a global tender for a new anti-aircraft radar system that will replace aging Soviet-legacy platforms. The Czech procurement will be stand-alone rather than pursued jointly with Poland, Hungary and Slovakia as previously considered. The decision was taken due to differing specifications for a jointly-developed system.
The Czech MoD's plan is for the purchase of five mobile 3D radars by 2017, with costs ranging between CZK1.5-1.7 billion ($69-78 million). The MoD will insist on the preferred bidder to have ties to local industry. One company planning to bid is local firm Retia, which worked with a Slovak counterpart to begin developing a radar called ReUNION.
