NEWTOWN, Conn. - Lockheed Martin, Mission Systems and Training has been selected by the U.S. Navy under a modification to a previously awarded contract to exercise an option for the upgrade of the AEGIS Combat System. The $24.07 million contract will move forward engineering efforts for the AEGIS' next/future Advanced Capability Build (ACB). It supports design, development, integration, test, and delivery of computer program baselines and associated hardware technology insertions.
At the time of the award, $95,000 had been obligated out of U.S. Navy's FY13 RDT&E funds, with the funds not expiring at the end of the fiscal year. Lockheed Martin will perform its work at facilities in Moorestown, New Jersey and Pittsfield, Massachusetts, with completion expected in December 2013.
The AEGIS Combat System utilizes Lockheed Martin's 3-D, multifunction, phased-array SPY-1 radar in the primary role. The SPY-1 radar began testing in 1972 and found deployment across a wide range of the U.S. Navy's fleet as a valuable part of AEGIS, making it one of the more venerable and popular radar options. Forecast International expects the SPY-1 to gradually make way for a more modern, active phased-array radar sometime toward the end of this decade.
