TAIWAN FIRES HARPOON FROM SUBMARINE
Sunday, October 19, 2014

TAIPEI - Taiwan performed a successful test of a Harpoon anti-ship missile from one of its diesel-electric submarine. This is the first firing of a Harpoon during a Taiwanese naval exercise.

The Harpoon missiles were launched from Hai Hu (Sea Tiger). This is a Dutch-built submarine. The drills took place last week.

Taiwanese Navy started taking delivery of this missile in 2013. The missiles will arm two Taiwanese Navy submarines. Previously, Taiwan's submarines only carried torpedoes.

Taiwan's Ministry of Defense (MoD) declined to comment on these news reports.

Taiwan already arms its F-16 combat aircraft with a version of the Harpoon. Taipei ordered the submarine-launched version of Harpoon in 2008 as part of a $6.5 billion arms deal.
