ANKARA - Spain will send a Patriot air defense unit to Turkey to replace the one withdrawn by the Netherlands. The Patriot surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) are stationed along Turkey's southern border with Syria.
The Netherlands, Germany and the United States each sent two Patriot missile batteries to Turkey in early 2013 to bolster air defenses along the border with Syria. The Dutch government announced in August it would withdraw its Patriot missile batteries from Turkey. This unit was operating in the province of Adana.
The Syrian civil war continues to drag on with more than 200,000 killed in the fighting.
